Dial Up
Home Network Dial-Up
South Plains College offers dial-up access to faculty and staff which will allow your personal computer to be connected directly to the SPC network at no charge. If you have a SPCnet e-mail address you may dial into the SPCnet network to gain access to the Internet.
Before setting up a dial-up connection, please be sure to have the following items:

Modem installed

Phone cord connected from the modem to a phone jack

South Plains College e-mail account
Listed below are the configurations for the following operating systems. Right click on My computer and select Properties if you are unsure as to what system you are currently running.
Dial-Up Instructions for Windows XP

Go to the Start menu and select Control Panels.

Go to Network and Internet Connections. Click on Network Connections.

Click Create a New Connection. Click Next.

Select Connect to Internet and click Next.

Choose Setup My Connection Manually and click Next.

Choose Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.

For the name of the connection, enter South Plains College . Click Next.

For the phone number, enter 894-4498. Click Next.

In the Username field, enter your username (e.g., asmith). In the Password field, you may choose to enter your password.

Select Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop and press Finish. Double-click the icon on that desktop that you just added. The computer will dial into our SPC server. If the ID and password are correct, you will have an Internet connection and may now launch your browser or email client.
Dial-Up Instructions for Windows 2000

Double-click on My Computer.

Double-click on Control Panel.

Double-click on Network and Dial-Up Connections.

Double-click on Make New Connection.

You will be welcomed to the Dial Up Connection Wizard. Click Next.

Select the radio button for Dial-Up to the Internet. Click Next.

In the welcome screen of the Internet Connection Wizard, select the radio button for I want to set up my internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network. Click Next.

If it is not already selected, select the radio button for I want to connect through a phone line and modem. Click Next.

The Choose Modem dialog box will appear. If you have a modem correctly installed, it should already be showing in the selection window. Click Next.

In Step 1 (Internet Account Connection Information), in the Area Code field type 806 and in the Telephone Number field type 8944498. Uncheck Use Area Code and Dialing Properties. Click Next.

In Step 2 (Internet Account Login Information), type your User Name (e.g., okubal) and your Password. Click Next.

In Step 3 (Configuring Your Computer), by default the connection will be called “Connection to 8944498 ”. You can either change the connection name to anything you wish or leave the default (this is just an identification label for the dialer). We suggest Dial South Plains College . Click Next.

When asked to set up your Internet mail account, select No and click Next. You will then see a wizard window offering to connect you to the Internet immediately. If you are ready to start navigating the web, leave it checked and click on Finished. If you are not, simply uncheck the box and click Next.

Navigate back to the newly created connection named South Plains College in the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder, do a single right-click on it and select Create Shortcut. A window will pop up informing you that you cannot create the shortcut in that window, and will ask you if you want to place it on your desktop. Click Yes. This will now create a shortcut for dial-up on your desktop. To launch it, simply double-click on the newly created icon.
Dial-Up Instructions for Macintosh
New Macintosh machines (those running OS8 or later) may proceed directly to Step 1. Mac OS X users should see the instructions in the next section. Others should contact the Information Technology Office to see if your system will work for dialing up to South Plains College.

Click on the Apple menu icon and go to Control Panels.

Select the PPP or the Remote Access control panel, whichever you have available.

From the top menu, select Remote Access and then TCP/IP. In the TCP/IP control panel, make sure that "Connect via" is set to "PPP." Also make sure that "Configure" is set to "Using PPP Server." If the settings are not correct, change them. Close the TCP/IP control panel to save the changes.

Back in the Remote Access control panel, make sure that "Registered User" is selected in the "Setup" area.

Type your South Plains College user name and password in the "Name" and "Password" blanks. (If you aren't sure what these are, contact the Information Technology Office.)

Enter the phone number 894-4498

Click the Connect button to connect to South Plains College. The Remote Access window will give you status updates informing you of what is happening. When you get connected, you should see the status indicating connect. At this point, you are connected to the Internet and are able to run web browser, check your email.

When you are finished, click the Disconnect button on the Remote Access window.
Dial-Up Instructions for Macintosh OS X
People who are using the Mac OS 10.0 software should upgrade to 10.1 before following these steps. Information on getting the upgrade is available on Apple's website (www.apple.com).

Double-click the icon for your hard drive.

Double-click the Applications icon.

Drag the Internet Connect icon to the Dock so it will be easy to locate. Then close the Applications window.

Click the Internet Connect icon on the Dock to open the Internal Modem window.

Click the Edit button to open the Network window and then select the PPP tab.

Service Provider: South Plains College
-
Telephone Number: 894-4498
-
Account Name: your South Plains College user name

Password: your South Plains College password
-
Click Apply Now and then go to System Prefs on the top menu and select Quit System Prefs. This will return you to the Internal Modem window.

Make sure "South Plains College" is displayed and the telephone number 894-4498 is selected. Enter your password if it is not already there and press the Connect button.

You will see the Status line change indicating what the modem is doing.

Once you get connected, the bottom of the window will change to reveal information about your connection.

Click the Red "X" Button to close that window. You are now connected to the Internet and are able to run your web browser, check your email.

When you are ready to disconnect, click the Internet Connect icon on the Dock. That will pull up the Internal Modem window once more. Click Disconnect. Then go up to Internet Connect on the top menu and select Quit Internet Connect.
