Sophos Antivirus
South Plains College has a site license for Sophos Antivirus for all SPC owned computers as well as employee home computers. For Windows 2000/XP/Vista, you should be running version 7.1. Windows 95/98/ME should be running 4.7. If you are, then your computer will be automatically updated from the network.
If you have an older version of Sophos or a different antivirus solution, you should upgrade to Sophos Antivirus 7. First, you must uninstall any old antivirus software. When you are done, follow the instruction based on your computer location and type:
SPC Network Connected Computers (not laptops, Windows XP only):
- Start -> Run -> \\levprint1\interchk\esxp\setup_sophos.cmd
- if prompted for a username and password, enter your domain username in the form of SPC\username and your domain/email password
- The installation will proceed automatically
Home Computers and Laptops (Windows 2000/XP/Vista only):
- Download http://support.southplainscollege.edu/sophos/savxpsa.exe
- Type in your SPC domain username - The username can be in the form of SPC\username or username@southplainscollege.edu
- Type in your SPC domain password.
- Save the file to your local computer, someplace where you can easily find it, such as the Desktop. When the download completes, doubleclick the program which you just downloaded (savxpsa.exe).
- The installation of the Sophos Automatic Update client will proceed automatically. When the AU client has completed installation it will install the Anti-Virus client from the Internet. The Anti-Virus client will keep itself updated automatically as long as your computer is connected to the Internet.
Home Computers and Laptops (Windows 9x):
- Download http://support.southplainscollege.edu/sophos/sav9xsa.exe (this is a 37MB file and will take considerable time on a dial-up connection.
- Type in your SPC domain username - The username can be in the form of SPC\username or username@southplainscollege.edu
- Type in your SPC domain password.
- Save the file to your local computer, someplace where you can easily find it, such as the Desktop. When the download completes, doubleclick the program which you just downloaded (savxpsa.exe).
- During installation, when prompted for login information to update Sophos, check the box that you will enter it later. Do not enter your SPC username and password. The login information is built into the installation.
Scanning for Viruses
- Start
- Programs
- Sophos Anti-Virus > Sophos Anti-Virus
- Click on Options from the file menu and the select Configuration from the drop down menu.
- Click on Action Tab and make sure the following are checked: Request Confirmation; Disinfect boot sectors; Disinfect documents; Disinfect programs; Disinfect mailboxes
- Make sure the Infected files box is checked and the option Delete or Shred is selected.
- Box pop up with "Would you like to use disinfection as an interim solution?" Select Yes to disinfect as an interim solution.
- Highlight Local Hard Drive (C:)
- Click GO button to start the scan.
You will receive a confirmation report at the end of the scan regarding what action was taken or needs to be taken.
