Health Information Services
Health Information TechnologyOffered at the SPC Reese Center
Successful completion of this competency-based two-year
program entitles the graduate to receive an Associate of Applied
Science degree and to be eligible to write the national exam for a
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The program
awards the Tech Prep Enhanced Skills Certificate upon completion
of additional technical courses. The program also offers
one certificate option which prepares students for employment
as a transcription specialist. The Commission on Accreditation
for Health Informatics and Information Management Education
(CAHIIM) in cooperation with the American Health Information
Management Association’s Council on Accreditation accredits the
Health Information
The Health Information Technology program begins in the
fall of each year. Enrollment is limited by the number of affiliated
practicum sites.
Program director is Nancy Powell, instructor in health
information technology.
Program Admission Requirements
The number of students admitted into Health Information
Technology program is limited. All individuals interested
in admission to the program should contact the Health
Information Technology program director for entrance criteria
and a program application. Applicants must complete the following
procedure:
1. Apply for admission to South Plains College and
complete all admission requirements. Admission to
the college does not guarantee admission to the
Health Information Technology program.
2. Complete a career counseling session with the program
director. The applicant may contact the program director
at (806) 885-3048.
3. Submit a completed program application and all applicable
college transcripts to the program director by
May 15 of the year of intended program enrollment.
Program applications are only accepted after the
completion of prerequisite courses.
4. All Transcription Specialist program applicants must
provide documentation of a minimum 40 wpm typing
score or be concurrently enrolled in a keyboarding
course.
