On View Now: Boredom and Failure (v. I) by Cody Arnall
Arnall Artworks Collage
Levelland, TX – The latest exhibition by Cody Arnall, Associate Professor of Sculpture at Texas Tech University School of Art, titled Boredom and Failure (v. I), is now on view through Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Art Gallery, Christine Devitt Fine Arts Center, South Plains College. The exhibition features a unique collection of works that challenge traditional interpretations of art and explore the productivity found in boredom and failure.
Arnall's artist statement reveals his approach to art-making: "I mess up a lot in the studio. I let incomplete pieces, manipulated materials, and half-baked ideas sit for long periods of time (sometimes years) out of fear of making bad art. Out of boredom and this weird need to make: I collect trash from the side of the road while walking my dog, save dust from the studio floor, pick up rocks, make molds of mundane objects, visit cemeteries, go to former nuclear test sites, and film secluded landscapes while I sit or lay quietly. This is how I make work."
With this exhibition, Arnall aims to challenge the need to gather meaning from or interpret art. He encourages viewers to take a moment to be lost and confused, emphasizing that it is okay to experience art without immediate understanding. This show is the first in a series of exhibitions exploring productivity in boredom and failure as an art maker.
Cody Arnall was born and raised in Tulsa, OK. He received his B.F.A. in Studio Art from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, and his M.F.A. from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Before his appointment at Texas Tech University, Arnall spent two years as a Full-Time Instructor at the Paducah School of Art & Design in Paducah, KY. He is a founding member of the artist-run gallery and studio space, CO-OPt Research + Projects in Lubbock, TX.
Arnall's recent exhibitions include Box13 Artspace and Sculpture Month Houston in The Silos at Sawyer Yard, both in Houston. He has also shown at the University of Notre Dame, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Contemporary Art Museum Plainview, Southeast Missouri State University, Axis Gallery, K Space Contemporary, CICA Museum, Site: Brooklyn, Barrister’s Gallery, Durango Arts Center, Pump Project, Terminal 136, Herron School of Art and Design, Brigham Young University, DEMO Project, Living Arts, the American University Museum, and The Shed. Additionally, Arnall has participated in residencies at Sculpture Space in Utica, NY, and Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.
Join us for an artist talk and reception on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 6 to 8 PM at the Art Gallery, Christine Devitt Fine Arts Center, South Plains College. This event offers an opportunity to engage with Arnall and gain insight into his creative process.
All are open and free to the public.

Looking at People Exhibition Showcasing Melinda Green Harvey’s Photography
This image features a vibrant group of children and a young woman posed in a lively outdoor setting. The backdrop includes two classic cars, suggesting an urban environment, possibly reminiscent of a tropical locale.
South Plains College Art Gallery is proud to present Looking at People, an exhibition featuring the work of photographer Melinda Green Harvey. Harvey, a Lubbock native, shares her journey and artistic philosophy through this debut body of work.
Harvey reflects on her work, stating, "Photography found me, and once I embraced it, everything changed. I have two guiding principles: always push myself to improve and love the adventure. This show, Looking at People, represents both principles. After years of avoiding photographing people, I pushed past my insecurities and gave it a try, expanding my photographic adventure. I'm thrilled to debut this body of work at South Plains College’s Art Gallery. Please step in and meet some of the people I've encountered lately. They won’t mind."
Melinda Green Harvey's photography is inspired by her father's early lessons and her passion for capturing the beauty in imperfection. Her work focuses on the old, faded, and ragged, striving for honesty without sentiment. Harvey's favorite days are spent driving back roads with a camera and no destination in mind. Represented by Broadway Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery and Charles Adams Gallery, her photography can also be found on Instagram @melgal and her website, melindagreenharvey.com. She also works in Levelland at South Plains Community Action Association as a grants writer.
An artist talk and reception will be announced soon. The exhibition is on view through Friday, March 14, 2025. All are open and free to the public.
